RQ ANNOUNCES INCREASED BASE RIDING FEE

10 JUNE 2019

Racing Queensland has entered into a three-year agreement with the Queensland Jockeys’ Association to increase the base riding fee across the state.

Having agreed to an 11% increase last year, RQ will double down on their commitment over the next term, with the base riding fee rising by $40 per ride between 2018 and 2021.

In addition, RQ will also lift the maximum weekly benefit applicable under the workers’ compensation insurance policy over the term of the agreement and comes just days after the Queensland Government announced an $8 million prize money increase.

“The agreement is the culmination of a positive and collaborative approach to negotiations between Racing Queensland and the QJA,” RQ COO Adam Wallish said.

“Not only does it provide certainty and surety to both parties over the next three years, it acknowledges the outstanding service provided by our jockeys across the state on a weekly basis.

“It is well known how difficult it is to be a jockey – they make enormous sacrifices to be at the coalface of our sport – so we’re pleased to be able to work hand-in-glove with them on this matter.”

In recent times, RQ has delivered a raft of positive initiatives including $18 million in additional prize money – a further $8 million was announced by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk at the weekend – as well as the introduction of prize money distribution down to 10th at TAB meetings.

QJA President Glen Prentice welcomed the agreement on behalf of his members.

“We’re pleased to have reached a positive outcome with this three-year agreement with Racing Queensland on riding fees and other benefits payable to our 210 members,” Mr Prentice said

“We believe the agreement appropriately recognises the contribution made by jockeys to racing in this state.”

“The QJA appreciated Racing Queensland’s positive approach to the negotiations.

“We believe the outcomes to be fair and reasonable and our members look forward to continuing their contribution to the resurgence of racing here in Queensland.”
