Qld Workcover Policies

Hi,
Just a reminder to all trainers that workcover policy premiums were due on 30 September.
If somehow you missed the date please still pay ASAP. Workcover will impose an extra late fee.
Any trainer who employs staff full time or casual or once every so often people such as trackwork riders or strappers to lead a horse in the mounting yard on race days definitely need to have workcover in case these people were to suffer an injury.
If someone is injured whilst working with a trainers horse they are entitled to care through workcover. Medical costs and lost wages, particularly if that person has a second job outside of Racing can add up very quickly.
A central Qld trainer (ATA member) has recently found out that he is in a world of pain due to  playing Russian roulette without a workcover policy when he employed numerous staff.
It is believed workcover Qld is now pursuing the trainer for a figure approaching $200,000 and still rising as a worker struggles to regain full health following a work related accident.
This so called “professional” has gambled and lost.
Please make sure you have the correct cover or a split second in time where an accident occurs could ruin your life financially.

Racing Appeals Board

Hi,

During an industry forum update earlier this week, Stirling Hinchcliffe, Qld Racing minister announced that a new Racing appeals board is to be set up to hear various appeals lodged by Racing participants following stewards decisions.

The board will be a group of people with relevant legal and or industry experience across the 3 Racing codes.

There will be a permanent chair person who will then select 2 other members from the pool of board representatives who have best experience relating to the matter under appeal. For example if a thoroughbred code jockey the reps will have thoroughbred expertise and at least one would probably be a retired respected jockey who has no perceived conflict of interest.

Certain offences or repeat offenders will not allow for automatic application for a stay of proceedings.

The appeals board will meet weekly either in person or via video link etc to hear any matters pending.

It is hoped that an independent board decision will reduce any further higher appeals to QCAT but this right will still exist if a particular person still feels it is warranted, albeit there may not be an automatic stay to allow that person to continue riding or training whilst WCAT deliberates.

Best regards,
Ross
