RQ announces prizemoney boost

Provincial racing in Queensland will receive a boost under a $2.2 million prize money increase announced by Racing Queensland.

RQ chief executive Eliot Forbes said commercial decisions made by the board had led to a better than forecast financial results allowing for the budget increase next year.

“The 2015/16 Annual Report showed that RQ recorded a loss of $21.8 million and the new board and management team were well aware of the challenges to return RQ to a sustainable path,” Forbes said.

“We remain committed to improving performance in all areas of racing and we are now seeing pleasing early results.”

“Improved wagering turnover and changes to the Race Information Fee framework have enhanced revenue and a continued focus on costs will lead to a much-improved financial result for 2016/17.”

Provincial prize money will be increased to $16,000 for all classes excluding maidens at Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Ipswich meetings.

An additional Saturday restricted race of $30,000 will be added for all metropolitan Saturday meetings.

The Bernborough Handicap will be increased to $300,000 and the Nudgee Handicap in Brisbane will be worth $125,000.

The current program of country race meetings and prize money levels will be maintained for country and regional racing.

A $160,000 Country Racing Series’ including the three regional series and the inaugural Battle of the Bush with a $100,000 final for country horses on Tatt’s Tiara Day will be held in 2018.

New Trainer / Owner Reforms & Agreements

Hi,

As we all know, occasionally disputes can arise between trainers and owners regarding outstanding fees. Often horses are moved from one stable to another despite fees owing and there has never been a very satisfactory standardised resolution process for trainers or owners.

Racing Australia is attempting to bring in a standard Trainer /Owner contract which can be enforced under the Rules of Racing.

Of course it is difficult to come up with a one size fits all as some trainers have $1m horses racing in $1M races and some in rural areas have $1K horses racing in $5K races.

Attached is information relating to the new trainer / owner agreements and racing rules covering these reforms.

This is scheduled to take effect as of August 1st 2017.

There is a lot of information in these documents and they are basically in their final format unless there are valid concerns or objections raised.

Certain points can be varied by agreement between the trainer and owner and jointly signed as long as nothing changes the overall intent. For example where it states that a trainer only needs to inform an owner and seek approval for nomination fees, vet treatment s etc if costs will exceed $2000.00, it seems that $ value figure can be varied by joint agreement.

There is quite a lot to absorb in all the attached files but would appreciate your constructive comments as it is probably the last chance to tidy any thing up prior to things being locked in.

Please respond by 7th July 2017 so we can collate a QTA response to Racing Queensland.

Conditions relating to Ballotting For Trials

Over the next 6 – 12 months Racing Queensland will be working with provincial and regional race clubs to roll out televised official trials and reduce the number of unofficial jumpouts for horses.

These trials will also posted on RQ website for replay at any time.

RQ believes this will help stimulate wagering growth on Qld product as punters like to assess “revealed form.”

This system is about to go “live” in metro Brisbane in coming weeks.

However it raises some issues regarding time frame for Sky coverage etc which might reduce the number of trials which can be run at a particular venue.

Whilst this is most likely to effect metro areas with more horses nominating for trials the QTA still has an opportunity to comment on balloting conditions if they are ever required to be enforced.

Please read the comments below and respond with your thoughts so we can feed it back to RQ.

“Trainers, please provide your thoughts on the process RQ should use to “ballot” or choose horses if the number of entries is above the limit of how many trials will be run.

It is not expected to always be required – but if they cap the number of trials at say 20 then some horses may miss out.

Reasons for capping : live coverage can’t go past approx 11am, even earlier in Daylight Savings, jockeys association believe workload can be to high, track usage etc.

Initial thoughts are 2yo’s be given priority – and horses that have been requested to trial by stewards.

Please offer any suggestions to what process RQ could take to determine which horses miss out if they are over subscribed. (like last week at Doomben with 26 trials)”
